ONTARIO — The Ohio District 5 Area Agency on Aging Inc. has announced Myron Amstutz has been selected as the 2018 Outstanding Senior Citizen for Ashland County.
He and eight other recipients were honored on Thursday, Aug. 23 at a ceremony hosted at Hawkins Corner. Amstutz was nominated by Becky Echelberger of Senior Citizens of Ashland County.
In her nomination, she shared that Amstutz has resided in Ashland since 1962. He taught math at Plymouth High School for 31 years, and after retirement, he became a funeral director and worked at Heyl Funeral Home in Ashland for 13 years. Amstutz is also active in his church and helps build ramps for disabled individuals as part of the wood worker’s team.
He is a board member of the Ashland County Historical Society, a member of the Ashland County chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society, and a member and former board member of the Senior Citizens of Ashland.
Amstutz has been a member of Lions Clubs International since 1967 and an active member of the Ashland Evening Lions Club since 1970. He has held the positions of secretary for 26 years, president, director, chaired several committees, and was Ashland Evening Lions Club “Lion of the Year” in 1985.
State Representative Darrell Kick, Mayor Matt Miller, and Commissioner Jim Justice recognized Amstutz for his achievements and contributions.
“I’ve often heard that men and women live the first half of their life trying to achieve success, fortune, fame, all those things… Then they spend the second half of their life trying to achieve a life of lasting significance,” said Mayor Miller during the ceremony. “The good news about Myron is he learned early on that you should pursue those matters of lasting significance right from the very beginning.”
Each year the Area Agency on Aging honors senior citizens who are making a difference in their communities and present a positive image of aging.
There is one award recipient for each county in the Agency’s service area (Ashland, Crawford, Huron, Knox, Marion, Morrow, Richland, Seneca, and Wyandot.)
Awardees must first be nominated by an individual or organization involved with seniors. They are then selected by the Agency based on the impact of their contributions and accomplishments within the community made after reaching age 60.
Additionally, the following residents of Ashland County received the 2018 Safe Driver Award at the ceremony: Cindy Baughman, Allen Black, John Chorpening, Pat Madden, Ruby Murphy, Jim Norris, Tassie Cole, Doug Pelton, Doug Fike, Vic Staley, Bill Hastings, Maria Sulter, Cindy Litten, Paul Uebel, and Ken Uhler.

BACKGROUND & CONTRIBUTIONS:
Myron was born in Wadsworth, Ohio and grew up in Lattasburg in Wayne County. He graduated from Northwestern High School, received a bachelor’s degree from Ashland College, and a master’s degree in math education.
After retiring from teaching math at Plymouth High School for 31 years, Myron became a funeral director and worked at Heyl Funeral Home in Ashland for 13 years. He married Carolyn Warnes and has resided in Ashland since 1962.
As a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Myron was a choir member and is currently on the usher team and the Wood Worker’s team building ramps for handicapped persons. He attends the symphony orchestra regularly and is a Board Member of the Ashland County Historical Society, a member of the Ashland County chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society, and a member and former board member of the Senior Citizens of Ashland.
Myron has been a member of Lions Clubs International since 1967 and an active Life member of the Ashland Evening Lions Club since 1970 with 50 years perfect attendance! He has held the positions of Secretary for 26 years, President, Director, chaired several committees, and was Ashland Evening Lions Club “Lion of the Year” in 1985. Currently, Myron is involved with the Recycling Committee, the School Children Vision & Hearing Screening for Ashland City Schools, the Noonan Fund Use, and the Adult and Finance committees.
He served the District Lions as District Governor in 2000-2001 and was responsible for the success of 64 Lions Clubs. He also served as the Cabinet Secretary-Treasurer for the District, Zone 7 Chairman, and received the District Governors Merit award in 1997.
His hobbies include travel, woodworking, golf, and showing his antique auto.
