MADISON TOWNSHIP –Residents of the Forest Hills Mobile Home Park located at 710 Ashland Road were given 40 smoke detectors after a combined effort from the Madison Township Fire Department in cooperation with the United Way, American Red Cross, Mechanics Bank and Mansfield Police Department.

The organizations took part in the Day of Caring, Aug. 3.

“The Day of Caring is exactly what it says. It’s a day of giving back and making Richland County a better place,” fire chief Ron Luttrell said.

There were about 20 total volunteers who installed smoke detectors to residences. Luttrell said they knocked on every door in the area. Not everyone wanted one.

“The 710 Ashland Road address has had a few fires over the last year,” Luttrell said. “One was minor, but there was a fatality. It wasn’t caused by the fire. It was a health issue that we feel she would have been OK if she had a smoke detector.”

Additional areas covered were Indiana Avenue, Michigan Avenue and Kentucky Avenue south of Ashland Road. Smoke Detector install teams provided by the United Way were, Mechanics Bank and Mansfield PD and the Members of the Madison Township Fire Department. In all, 23 residences received 40 smoke detectors installed.

The Fire Department reports having increased fire response activity in the area within the last year and requested a smoke detector install drive be held in the area to enhance home fire safety for the residents of the community.

Luttrell said his department is always willing to install a smoke detector into homes. Call the department at 419-589-5555 to set up an appointment.
