Bruce Phipps, Commander of the Richland County Joint Veterans Counsel announced an American flag will be raised on Thursday, June 28, 2018 in front of the Richland County courthouse at 6:00 p.m. to honor deceased Richland County US Army Ranger, Sgt. Michael Christopher O’Neill.
Michael C. O’Neill served with the US Army Rangers from 2001 to 2004. He served 2 tours of duty in Afghanistan and 1 tour in Iraq.
Michael was born May 7, 1982 in California to George and Holly O’Neill. He graduated from Mansfield Sr. High School in 2001. Michael, 22 died on Nov. 21, 2004 in Germany from injuries suffered in Afghanistan. Michael is buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
The Honored Veteran’s Flag will be flown for 21 days at the Richland County Administration Building after which the Veteran’s name will be engraved on a brass name plate and added to a plaque listing those veteran’s honored in the same manner already displayed on the wall in the foyer of the Richland County Administration Building.
The Joint Veterans Council of Richland County operates the flag program.
