George R. Cashell, 97, of Mansfield passed on Sunday, June 3, 2018 following a fall and short stay in OhioHealth Mansfield hospital.
George was born July 11, 1920 in Morrow County, the son of Jesse R. and Georgia (George) Cashell. He graduated from Lexington High School and the Mansfield Business College. A member of the Greatest Generation, he served with the Army Air Corps during World War II. George was stationed on Tinian in the South Pacific and honorably discharged in April of 1946.
George married Rosemary Massa on April 17, 1948. He worked for over 40 years as Credit Manager for The Barnes Manufacturing Company in Mansfield, retiring in 1985. During retirement, he and Rosie enjoyed 25 years wintering in Sebring, Florida where they played lots of golf and spent time with friends.
Locally, he was a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church, American Legion Post 16, VFW Post 3494, AMVETS Post 26, and has been a member of the ELKS for over 73 years. George was not only a devoted father and husband, but was also an avid community supporter.
He served as president of Junior Achievement of North Central Ohio, coordinated many youth and community activities, volunteered with the Girl and Boy Scout programs and coached youth baseball.
He enjoyed all Ohio sports and was an avid Ohio State Football and Cleveland Indians fan. George loved mushroom hunting and had a fun-loving sense of humor. Most of all, George will be remembered for his kindness and for encouraging others to do their best. He was dedicated to his family and to the community.
George is survived by his children Steve Cashell (Dorothy), of Rockport, Texas, Jim Cashell (Craig), of Oxford, Ohio, Carol Bookwalter (Chuck), of Burlington, Vermont, and Peg Cashell (David Stevens), of Logan Utah; 10 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, and his brother Walter “Mick” Cashell (Shirley), of Lexington.
Visitation will be held Friday, June 8, 2018, at the Marion Avenue Snyder Funeral Home from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Visitation will be followed by a short service and burial in the Mansfield Catholic Cemetery. The Rev. Father Autsin Ammanniti will officiate.
The family would like to thank George’s neighbors, friends, doctors, and personnel from the Area Agency on Aging who helped him live independently in his home until his death. We will all miss his independent spirit. Memorial contributions in honor of George may be made to the Richland County Foundation.
