BUCYRUS – A group of students from the talented and gifted program at Bucyrus Elementary School showed off their robots during the regular meeting of the Bucyrus City School District Board of Education Thursday, May 24.

The students, Aubrie Kimmel, Camille Brent, Seth Price, and Isabella Stang, explained to the board the robot projects they’ve been working on throughout the school year with Talented and Gifted teacher Shelley Vance.

“Mrs. Vance has done a great job challenging our students to expand their thinking and try new things, like working with robotics,” Elementary School Principal Timothy Souder said. “These four are just a few of the many students who work on a variety incredible projects throughout the school year.”

The top five students in the annual Sodexo Future Chef competition, Alory Meade, Aden Holmes, Kyle Pifer, Mackenzie Booth, and Aubrie Kimmel, each received a commendation from the board. Kimmel, Madison Kent, Brayden Campbell, Grace Jackson, Zoey Hoskins, and Elizabeth Wilson received board commendations for serving as Leader in Me Student Lighthouse team panelists during the Elementary School’s Leadership Day.

The board approved all agenda items as presented, including the monthly donation from the Bucyrus City School District staff for the Staff Scholarship. The district’s staff donates approximately $3,600 each year.

“Our staff is very generous in supporting the scholarship fund,” Bucyrus Superintendent Kevin Kimmel said. “The Staff Scholarship fund was able to award $5,000 in scholarships to very deserving members of the Class of 2018.”

The board approved a measure to set lunch prices for the 2018-2019 school year. Preschool through fifth grade student full price meals will be $2.75, while students in sixth through twelfth grade will pay $3.00 for a full price lunch. The board also approved a measure to waive the pay to participate fees for interscholastic athletics.

The board adjourned to executive session with no additional action being taken. The next regular meeting of the Board of Education will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the Lincoln Administrative Center Thursday, June 28.
