MANSFIELD — More than 1,000 flowers were planted at the Richland Carrousel Park downtown on Wednesday morning.

The tradition of planting the flower beds has taken place since the park opened 25 years ago.

Bill Collins, who designed the flower arraignment, stayed busy quarterbacking the volunteers who came to help.

“This is a tradition from year to year,” he said. “But it’s my first year.”

Ralph Bright, who spent the past 16 years on the annual projects has retired.

Collins, who designed plant arraignments at Kingwood Center Gardens as head gardener, is now at the helm. The design includes sunpatiens, cannes, impatiens and papyrus for height, Collins said. The design will have colors similar to ones in the surrounding planters on Main Street.

Collins said this project could not be accomplished without help from volunteers, including those from the Men’s Garden Club and the Master Gardeners.

The flowers will be looked after by Collins and volunteers throughout the summer.

“I think it will be a showpiece just like it always is.
