If you need evidence of how much a city might value local journalism that looks forward, outward, and upward in its storytelling, look no further than Mansfield, Ohio.
In a little more than a month, nearly two dozen organizations have partnered with our newsroom to support solutions-oriented independent journalism to the tune of nearly $70,000. These Newsroom Partners have astonished us with their vision and generosity in pursuit of local reporting that tells the whole story of our region.
To a person, these organizations have demonstrated their belief in the critical and influential role local news plays in civic life. Moreover, they understand independent journalism focused on effective responses to social problems is among the most important kinds.
We are humbled by their support and simply cannot thank them enough. They have taken civic responsibility and engagement to a unique level, and their interest is gaining national attention.
Why Solutions Journalism?
Our newsroom has been passionate about Solutions Journalism after learning its methodology and structure provided a skeleton for forward-looking reporting. Whether it was flooding, infant mortality, food insecurity, or internet deserts; Solutions Journalism guided us through complicated topics that needed a local lens.
As we have become more familiar with the team at SJN and the incredible ecosystem of solution-focused reporters all over the world, our commitment to the practice has only grown.
Two huge projects in 2018-19
At the dawn of 2018, our newsroom began two intense Solutions Journalism projects that are focused on very different subjects that affect all of us in some way.
The first, Rising from Rust, takes a deep dive into how small cities like Mansfield re-invent themselves to thrive in a new economy.
The second is about something we all face eventually… getting older. This series, titled Gray Matters, will examine how the very best are caring for their elders.
Both series will be reported extensively over the next 12 months. Our team will commit innovative and public-powered acts of journalism across all mediums. This a huge lift. We invite you to join us. Why? Because Solutions Journalism is best done with people instead of to them.
