Harold D. Powers, 84, of Ontario, passed away early Tuesday morning, May 8, 2018, at OhioHealth Mansfield Hospital.
He was born Feb. 22, 1934, in Portsmouth, Ohio, one of nine children of late Warrick and Myrtle (Griffitts) Powers.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during the Korean War. Born to be a leader and protector, Harold devoted his life to keeping others safe. He worked as a security guard at Tappan Company for several years, and retired as a security guard for Mansfield General Hospital.
He was a Captain in the Ontario Police Department Auxiliary for 10 years. Although his work required a serious demeanor, Harold was a jovial man and enjoyed making others laugh, bringing a smile to their face. He was also a gifted artist. Harold was a longtime member of the Church of God of Prophecy.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Shirley Kuhn Powers; a son, Bill (Cindy) Powers, of Norwalk, Ohio; two grandchildren, Stephanie (Joseph) Fontenot and Mandy Powers, both of Clarksville, Tennessee; two step grandchildren, Steven and Mike Collins; and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by eight brothers and sisters.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, May 10, 2018, at the Ontario Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, 100 S. Lexington-Springmill Road. The funeral service will be held in the funeral home on Friday at 2 p.m. with additional visitation beginning at 1 p.m. He will be laid to rest in Oak Grove Memorial Park with military honors presented by the Richland County Joint Veterans Burial Detail.
