GALION – The Galion City School District Board of Education approved the district calendar for the 2018-2019 school year during its meeting on Tuesday night.

The opening day for students in grades kindergarten through 12 will be Monday, Aug. 20, 2018. The end of the first semester and final day for students and staff before Winter Break is Friday, Dec. 21, 2018. The last day of school for students will be Thursday, May 23, 2019, with the tentative date for graduation being Sunday, June 2, 2019.

“The administration and staff worked together to develop a school calendar that is advantageous for students,” said superintendent Jim Grubbs. “We will continue the one-time monthly two-hour delayed start for students to allow our staff to work through vital professional development activities to better serve our students.”

The board voted to accept donations from the Christ United Methodist Church Mission Fund and First United Methodist Church Memorial Fund to the Galion City Schools Community Fund. The board also recognized Christ United Methodist Church and its parishioners for their donations of hats, gloves and winter coats to the district for students in need throughout the months of January and February.

“The financial support our students receive from community groups and organizations is absolutely amazing,” Grubbs said. “We are grateful for the donation of winter clothing items to help our students during the coldest months of the year stay warm.”

The board also approved a resolution selecting MKC Associates as the design firm for the proposed bus garage and athletic complex on the district’s campus. The next regular monthly meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the Galion Middle School computer lab Tuesday, March 20.
