MANSFIELD – For Jenna Hendershott and J.P. Pocock, fitness goes beyond being physically healthy.
They hope to build a strong community through Downtown Fitness, a fully-equipped 24-hour gym at 67 N. Main Street, where Pocock opened CrossFit Katana last year.
“Obviously, we want people to be strong and physically healthy and fit, but it’s more than that,” Hendershott said. “To us being strong is being all around well – mentally, emotionally, spiritually, physically and getting the community involved.”
With this in mind, she and Pocock came up a “Strong Community Builders” program at the center of their business plan. Area employers and organizations can enroll for a one-time $50 fee, which opens up discounted $21 memberships for employees.
From each of those, a dollar will be donated to a local charity like the Friendly House. The names of the Strong Community Builders will also be listed on a banner at Downtown Fitness.
Hendershott and Pocock known each other for years, so the decision to work together seemed natural.
“We share a lot of the same morals and values,” Hendershott said.
They tossed around ideas for months before pinning down the “perfect business model.”
“My business has always been a group class business,” Pocock said. “I never had the assets required to get the 24-hour side of the gym going, and we’ve got this huge, super facility, so we’re teaming up to use all the space.”
The gym is adding cardio and circuit training machines, free weights and “anything else that you would need for a training facility,” according to the business partners. Plus, they will offer more classes.
The new gym will make its debut Friday, March 2 with a grand-opening gala.
