MANSFIELD — The four Mansfield Division of Police officers involved in a shooting on Dec. 24 at 187 S. Mulberry St. have been returned to full active duty, according to a press release from the office of chief Ken Coontz.

“The four Mansfield Police officers involved in the Christmas Eve shooting at 187 South Mulberry Street have been cleared to return to full duty,” Capt. Shari Robertson stated in an email to Richland Source. “This is following an initial review of the incident as required by Division policy and procedure.”

Policemen back on duty include Officer Dave Johnson, Officer Charles Hamilton, Officer Mark Boggs and Officer Cameron Shepherd.

On Christmas Eve, at approximately at 6:49 p.m., Mansfield Police responded to a report of an intoxicated man threatening to slit his wrist.

“Shortly after arriving at the incident location, officers confronted the suspect,” Coontz said after the incident. “Officers attempted to use a taser that had no effect. During the confrontation the suspect was shot.”

Coontz said officers provided medical first aid at the scene.

“BCI and I will be conducting the investigation into the shooting,” Coontz said. “The officers involved in the incident were placed on administrative leave per department policy.”

The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) is currently handling the case investigation and there are no further details to release at this time.
