NEW LONDON — Information and applications for Firelands Electric’s annual scholarship and Youth Tour programs are now available.

Students who reside in a home served by Firelands Electric Cooperative are eligible to apply, and materials for all programs can be found under the Community tab at www.FirelandsEC.com.

All youth program applications must be received in the Firelands Electric Cooperative office by 5 p.m. Feb. 1, 2018.

Firelands Electric, a Touchstone Energy Partner, is a member-owned, not-for-profit electric cooperative providing electric service to approximately 9,100 homes and businesses in rural areas of Ashland, Richland, Huron, and Lorain counties.

Each year, Firelands Electric Cooperative awards $10,000 in scholarships to outstanding high school seniors who have a minimum GPA of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale.

Applications will be reviewed and selected finalists will be invited for a personal interview and written cooperative knowledge test at Firelands’ office in New London on Monday, Feb. 19, 2018.

The top ten students (five boys and five girls) will receive awards from Firelands. The top young man or woman chosen as the overall applicant will then be eligible to compete for additional scholarships from Ohio’s Electric Cooperatives during the statewide competition on April 17.

Touchstone Energy Achievement Scholarship

The Touchstone Energy Achievement Scholarship program recognizes high school seniors who have overcome personal challenges in their pursuit of an education, and who may not qualify for more traditional scholarships. Students with a GPA of 2.75 on a 4.0 scale, who express the Touchstone Energy brand core values in their lives, are invited to apply.

Firelands Electric will award the top applicant a $1,000 scholarship.

2018 Youth Tour Experience

As part of the annual Youth Tour, Firelands Electric Cooperative, in cooperation with Ohio’s Electric Cooperatives and the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA), will sponsor up to two high school sophomores or juniors on an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, D.C., this summer.

This year’s tour will take place June 8 to 14. Applicants must be high school sophomores or juniors who are not eligible for a high school diploma before May/June 2019. Additional information about this unique trip is available at www.firelandsec.com/content/youth-tour-experience and at www.electric.coop, under the Youth Tour Resources section.
