MANSFIELD — Mansfield City School’s Spanish Immersion school has been recognized by the Ohio Department of Education as a High Performing School of Honor.
“I am very proud of the Spanish Immersion School for being named an Ohio Department of Education High Performing School of Honor, Mansfield Schools District Superintendent Brian Garverick said. “Previously, the school earned awards as an ODE School of Promise and a National Title I Distinguished School.
“Principal Gabe Costa, the teachers, support staff, students and parents have worked very hard for Spanish Immersion’s academic achievements. I congratulate them for this honor.”
The honor, which was bestowed on four Ohio public schools Tuseday, is given to schools which served 40 percent or more economically disadvantaged students. Performance on the Ohio State Test is an important factor for the honored schools.
The ODE took an aggregate test grade from third grade to eight grade for the years 2013 to 2017. Combined grades in English Language Arts I, English Language Arts II, Intermediate Math 1, Intermediate Math II, Algebra I, and Geometry end of course exams were taken into consideration.
The schools also had to have the five-year combined reading and math proficiency rates: All Students Group: 90 percent or greater proficiency, Low-Income Subgroup: 80 percent or greater proficiency, Racial/Ethnic Subgroups: 80 percent or greater proficiency, Students with Disabilities Subgroup: 80 percent or greater proficiency English Language Learners Subgroup: 80 percent or greater proficiency.

Six are schools also were given the All A Award by the ODOE:
Wynford Junior High and Wynford High School in Crawford County, Buckeye Central Middle School in Crawford County, Galion Middle School in Crawford County, Taft Intermediate School in Ashland County and Crestview Middle School in Richland County were also honored.
Any Ohio school or district is eligible for the All A Award if it receives A’s on all of its applicable report card measures. Beginning in the 2017-2018 school year, the State Board of Education will recognize any school or district that earns an A on its report card overall component score.
