ASHLAND — Ashland University’s football team has improved its position in the quest for a spot in the NCAA Division II postseason.

In the second set of Super Region rankings released on Monday (Oct. 30) afternoon, the Eagles moved up one spot to No. 3 in Super Region Three. Ashland is 8-1 overall and 7-0 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, leads the GLIAC standings and has won eight consecutive games.

Seven teams from each of the four super regions will make up the 2017 playoff field of 28 teams. Ashland is one of 42 teams in Super Region Three from the GLIAC, Great Lakes Valley Conference, Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association and the Great American Conference.

The top team in each super region will receive a first-round bye on Nov. 18. The next three teams in each super region will play host to first-round games that day.

The first set of regional rankings were released on Oct. 23, and the third set will be released on Nov. 6. The Division II postseason selection show will be Nov. 12 at 5 p.m. on NCAA.com.

Ashland has made six NCAA Division II postseason appearances – 1986, 1997, 2007-08, 2012 and 2015.

Ashland University’s football team continues to move up the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Division II Coaches’ Top 25 poll one spot at a time.

In the latest AFCA poll released on Monday (Oct. 30) afternoon, the Eagles are ranked No. 11 in the country, up one position from the previous week’s poll and two spots better than two weeks ago. Ashland has won eight straight games, and leads the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference standings at 8-1 overall and 7-0 in the conference.

Since the inception of the AFCA poll in 2000, the Eagles have been ranked 65 times. In 2016, Ashland went the entire season in the Top 25 for the first time. The Eagles are 41-16 (.719) all-time as an AFCA Top 25 team.

Ashland is the highest-ranked GLIAC team in this week’s Top 25 poll. Ferris State is No. 12, while Grand Valley State is No. 19.
