ASHLAND – Ashland University basketball player Nick Bapst was taken by life flight to the Ohio State University Richard M. Ross Heart Hospital in Columbus Wednesday night after collapsing during a scrimmage in Findlay.
According to a social media post from a family member, emergency personnel had to revive Bapst after the junior passed out. The social media post says doctors believed Bapst had suffered one or two cardiac arrests and had sedated Bapst.
AU men’s coach John Ellenwood confirmed by email Friday morning that Bapst had collapsed on the sideline during the scrimmage. Ellenwood said Bapst is in serious condition and has been put into a medically induced coma for 48 hours “to limit brain activity.”
No information was available from the hospital regarding Bapst’s current condition.
Current and former teammates took to social media to comment on Wednesday’s events. Boo Osborne who played two seasons with Bapst before graduating in May, tweeted, “Please pray for my brother/old teammate @nicholas_bapst he can use the prayers and well wishes he can get right now please.”
Current teammate Jay Slone tweeted, “Everyone please take a minute to pray for my brother @nicholas_bapst. He needs every single one of us right now #PrayForNick #Family.”
Bapst, a 2015 Grove City graduate, was the leading scorer off the bench as a true freshman in 2015-2016, averaging 5.1 points per game and shooting 42.3 percent from 3-point range. Last season, Bapst averaged 7.2 points per game and shot 37.9 percent from behind the arc.
