FINDLAY — Galion had just finished second at the Tyger Invitational and coach Bryce Lehman liked what he saw.
“We have a good group of kids,” Lehman said on that steamy Friday afternoon in mid-August, “and they are meshing pretty well.”
Indeed.
The Tigers shot a team total of 338 on a rainy Thursday at Red Hawk Run Golf Course, finishing second at the Division II district tournament and earning one of the two state berths up for grabs.
Archbold won the district crown with a team total of 321.
“We only have one senior and two of our six scorers are freshmen,” Lehman said. “It’s a learning experience for the young guys.”
Junior Jack McElligott led the charge Thursday, shooting an 80. Freshman Spencer Keller fired an 82, while fellow freshman Matthew McMullen carded an 83.
Senior Mitch Dyer had a 93 and junior Matt Kingseed had a 106.
While the Tigers, who won a sectional title at Sawmill Creek last week, punched their ticket to next week’s state tournament at NorthStar Golf Club in Sunbury, Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference rival Ontario had a tough day. The Warriors, who won a sectional title of their own last week at Country Acres, shot a 356 Thursday and finished sixth.
Ontario was led by Marc Wilkins Jr., who shot an 81. Lane Thomas carded an 89 and Dominic Castelvetere had a 90. Jake Gleason had a 96 and Carter Kroll had a 110.
Shelby senior Dalton Boyce shot and Clear Fork freshman Gage Wolfgang both advanced to Thursday’s district tournament as individuals. Boyce shot an 80 and Wolfgang had a 105.
The Division II state tournament begins Oct. 13 and concludes Oct. 14 at NorthStar.
Division III: Plymouth finished 17th at the Division III district tournament at Stone Ridge Golf Club in Bowling Green.
The Big Red carded a team total of 398, led by Jacob Adams’ 89. Brody Brown shot a 101, while Nate Sexton had a 103 and Draven Kelley had a 105. Zeb Finnegan had a 108.
Crestview’s Hayden McMillen had an 87, while teammate Jacob Salyers shot an 89.
