Elizabeth Irene Kriegel

Elizabeth Irene Kriegel, 95, passed away Friday, July 14, 2017 in Liberty Nursing Care Center in Mansfield.

She was born Sept. 14, 1921 to parents Alva & Rhoda (Dixon) Wharton in North Liberty. Elizabeth was graduated from Mansfield Senior High. On Oct. 25, 1947 she married Paul L. Kriegel and they shared 45 wonderful years until he passed away in 1992. They are together again.

Elizabeth fostered over 130 children for Richland County Children Services during her life. She was known to many as “Mom Kriegel” and her loving heart changed the lives of everyone she cared for.

In younger years, she enjoyed skating at the Mansfield Coliseum. But above all, Elizabeth had a passion for loving children and serving her church.

A longtime member of Main Street United Methodist, Liz worked in the nursery and was a member of the Sunday School Class, Plus Ultra for over 60 years.

She is survived by her children: Pat (Randall) Young, Danny (Lana) Kriegel, and Lori Love, all of Mansfield; granddaughters Shari Lewis of Savannah and Lisa (Rodney) Bennett, of Mt. Vernon; step grandchildren Mike (Kristen) Mottayaw, Scott (Lisa) M ottayaw, and Lynn (Sam) Benavides, all of Mansfield; four great grandchildren; 10 step-great grandchildren; and seven step-great great grandchildren.

In addition to her loving husband, Elizabeth was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers: Arthur, John Chester, and Kenneth.

Her family will receive friends Monday, July 17, 2017 from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Marion Avenue Snyder Funeral Home where a funeral service honoring Elizabeth’s life will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday and friends are invited to call the hour prior. The Rev. Dr. DeWayne Smith will officiate and burial will follow in Mansfield Cemetery.
