OLIVESBURG — Crestview Middle School students Jimmy Dunn and Madalynn Aumend were selected to receive the Ohio High School Athletic Association’s prestigious Archie Griffin Sportsmanship Award.

The award, named for two-time Heisman Trophy winner Archie Griffin, is presented each year to two eighth-grade students, one male and one female. They are chosen by the school’s staff to have been outstanding in their efforts to promote sportsmanship in their school and community.

The award is designed to promote sportsmanship, ethics and integrity.

This year’s honorees were presented their awards at the annual academic award ceremonies held at the Middle School on May 18.

Madalynn is the daughter of Doug and Michelle Aumend. She ran cross country and track her 7th and 8th grade year. Her other interests include soccer and baton. She was a member of the Academic Challenge team and Student Council.

“This award means a lot to me. It shows that I always look for the positives and try really hard to be a good sport,” Madalynn said. “Sportsmanship is trying to do your best while supporting others. I always try to encourage everyone and be a positive, team player.

“I would like to thank my family, friends and teachers for pushing me to be a better person.

Jimmy is the son of Jim and Dana Dunn. He participated in track and cross Country.

“To receive this award is a great honor, I look at this achievement as not just for physical activity, but also for setting a good example by admitting when I’m wrong and helping and congratulating athletes from my own school as well as other schools,” Jimmy said.

Jimmy would like to thank his coaches, Mrs. Kindney, Mrs. Grandy, Mr. Garrabrant and Mrs. Will.

“I would especially like to thank Mrs. McFarland for noticing my potential and efforts as well as always pushing me as far as I could go,” he said. “I would also like to thank two of my closest friends in sports who have always supported me: Ross Kuhn and Robbie Johnson, as well as the rest of the girls and boys cross country and track teams.”
