Howard R. Webb, 87, of Ashland, passed away peacefully at Brethren Care Village, Wasen Center, on Dec. 20, 2016, after a well-fought battle with multiple health problems during the past year.
He was born in Flushing, New York, on July 22, 1929, to Howard and Ethel (Weitzel) Webb. He graduated from Bayside High School, then proudly joined the Marine Corps. A veteran of the Korean War, he left the Corps in 1952 as a Staff Sergeant, 1st Marine Division, having received a Bronze Star.
He was also a graduate of Iona College, New Rochelle, New York, with a B.A. in Economics.
In 1963, he and Mollie (Petersen) Webb were married at the First Presbyterian Church in Weyauwega, Wisconsin. They recently celebrated their 53rd anniversary on Nov. 30.
Moving to Ashland, Ohio, in 1965, from Ashland, New Jersey, he was first employed at the A.L. Garber Co., then Eagle Rubber, Flxible, and Tappan/Westinghouse. His career spanned management consulting, sales, and finally, Senior Systems Analyst, when he retired in 1984.
Friends will remember him as fun loving, and someone who just enjoyed life and being with his family. He loved following his favorite teams: the Ashland Arrows, A.U. Eagle, Cleveland Indians, The Ohio State Buckeyes, Green Bay Packers and Army football. He also enjoyed travel in the United States and abroad, spending time at a second home in Wisconsin.
For many years, Howard enjoyed playing golf and was a member of the Country Club of Ashland. He was also a 49-year member of Ashland Masonic Lodge #151 F. & A.M., 32nd Degree Mason, the Shrine Club, and Al Koran Temple.
In the past, he also served as Co-President of Ashland Band Parents and Co-President of Married Couples Dance Club. More recently, he enjoyed being a member of Big Bands and All That Jazz Society. He particularly enjoyed attending all of his children’s and grandchildren’s activities.
Howard was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Ashland, where he helped with Sunday school in various capacities, and served as an Elder.
He is survived by his wife; two children, Lindsey (Jim Jr.) Saffle, of Ashland, and Howie (Karen) Webb, of Charlotte, North Carolina; two granddaughters, both of Ashland, Sydney and Jordann Saffle; and two grandchildren in Charlotte, Miller Elizabeth and Eli Webb. He is also survived by a brother, Donald Webb, in Hattiesburg, Mississippi.
The family will receive friends from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 29, 2016, at the Ashland Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, 308 Claremont Avenue. Masonic services conducted by the Ashland Masonic Lodge #151 F. & A.M. will be held at 7:30 p.m.
The funeral service will be held at First Presbyterian Church on Friday at 11 a.m. A family burial will be held in Ashland Cemetery later in the day with the Ashland County Joint Veterans Burial Detail presenting military honors.
