MANSFIELD – The Richland County Sheriff’s Office has identified the victim and the alleged killer in a shooting death reported Sunday night in Mansfield.
According to the Sheriff’s Office incident report, 18-year-old Demarcus Delfzon Heard was the victim in a shooting at 862 Lincoln Terrace in Mansfield. On Dec. 18 at approximately 7:45 p.m. the Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call from the residence in reporting a victim of a shooting at this location.
The audio file from the 911 call records 45-year-old Dawnetta A. Heard telling a dispatcher her 18-year-old son had been shot in the shoulder as he walked home from the store. She described the incident as a drive-by shooting.
Deputies arrived on scene and initiated lifesaving efforts until the arrival of EMS. EMS transported Demarcus Heard to OhioHealth Mansfield Hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries.
Based on information obtained by the Sheriff’s Major Crimes Section, 39-year-old Dennis Lashawn Heard has been arrested and charged with one count of having weapons while under disability. He is being held in the Richland County Jail pending arraignment.
According to incident reports, both Demarcus Heard and Dennis Heard were residents at 862 Lincoln Terrace. However, Dennis Heard was eventually arrested at 73 E. 2nd St. in Mansfield.
On Dec. 19, the Sheriff’s Office requested the assistance of the Ohio Attorney General’s Office BCI & Crime Scene Investigation Unit to assist with the processing of 862 Lincoln Terrace. The processing is still ongoing, and though the investigation continues, the Sheriff’s Office is not actively pursuing additional suspect(s).
