MANSFIELD – A woman was arrested on Friday in connection to a child sustaining serious injuries while under her care.
Sarah Roberts, 19, a daycare provider at Step-By-Step Child Care at 1289 Ashland Rd. in Mansfield, was arrested for one count of child endangering, a third-degree felony. The charge was brought by Richland County Prosecutor Bambi Couch Page.
Roberts’ arrest comes after an investigation conducted by the Richland County Sheriff’s Office after the office was contacted by the child’s mother. The mother alleged her 11-month-old child sustained serious injuries while under Roberts’ care.
The child, identified by the daycare as Anastasia Salyers, was transported to Nationwide Children’s Hospital for a full examination, and remains there in fair condition. Initial reports from the hospital indicate the child sustained a fractured skull and a fracture to her right arm.
Step-By-Step Child Care issued a statement on Friday saying their management and staff is “deeply concerned” for the welfare of the child and her family, and that they would continue to cooperate with the investigation.
“Step-By-Step Child Care has taken all available measure to ensure the continued safety of all of the children whose care has been entrusted to us and whose safety continues to be our number one priority,” the statement reads.
The statement also notes the child care facility will remain open throughout the investigation. No further comments were made available due to the “sensitive and important nature” of the ongoing investigation.
Sarah Roberts is currently being held without bond pending arraignment in Mansfield Municipal Court.
