MANSFIELD — One man is in custody and two guns were confiscated after a bizarre incident Wednesday on George Hawk Road in Jackson Township.

Richland County Sheriff Steve Sheldon said his office dispatched deputies to the 3300 Block George Hawk Road at approximately 8:50 p.m. after an altercation which reportedly involved a gunshot.

Prior to the arrival of deputies, both subjects engaged in the altercation had fled the scene on foot. Authorities believe one of the subjects was armed.

As efforts were underway to locate the subjects, the sheriff’s office received a second 911 call from a female in the 3400 Block of George Hawk Rd. reporting an unknown male had run into her home, uninvited, stating, “They are trying to kill me.”

“Deputies arrived and cleared the second residence locating one of the subjects, who was identified as the victim of the original altercation,” Sheldon said. “With the scene investigation continuing, the second subject returned to the scene of the original incident and was taken into custody without incident.”

Two firearms were recovered and submitted to the Sheriff’s Office property room as evidence.

“Based on information obtained during preliminary interviews, it is believed the original altercation was the result of an earlier theft of the offender’s property, for which the offender believed the victim had committed,” Sheldon said. “The offender is currently being held in the Richland County Jail pending official charges.”
