MANSFIELD– Shawshank Redemption lovers and runner rejoice; this Saturday, June 11, the second annual Shakshank Hustle will have its runners walk or run past five film sites.
The hustle will begin and end at the Ohio State Reformatory with the race beginning at 8:30 a.m. The course will close at 10:30 a.m. The event is being put on by Rocketship Sports. Roads along the race route will be closed.
“They are going to pass, starting and ending at the Reformatory, the Bissman Building the corner where Brooks stood before he walked into the Brewer Hotel which was the Bissman Building, Carrousel Antiques where Morgan Freeman looked in at the window, Brooks bench, and then back to OSR,” said Jodie Snavely, group tour and media director of Mansfield and Richland County Convention and Visitors Bureau.
The prison bus from the movie, and the car Tim Robbins sat in at the start of the movie will be on display at OSR, she noted. Scott Mann, who played Glenn Quintin in the movie will be signing autographs at the event.
After the 7K hustle, an after party will be thrown at the Phoenix Brewery and participants will be able to watch the Shawshank Redemption at the Reformatory, Friday at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday at 9:30 a.m. Moviegoers must show their participation bib from the event to enter.
Registration for the Shawshank Hustle ends Friday, June 10. Registration is $55. Proceeds will go to the Ohio State Reformatory Preservation Society.
At its inaugural event, people from 35 states participated. This year the race already has 2,500 people registered.
“There is also a virtual run available in case someone from California can’t make it,” Snavely said.
Participants of the race will get a shirt and a medal at the end of the event.
