MANSFIELD (UPDATE 3:45 p.m.) — A 911 call for an assault with a deadly weapon resulted in an hour-long standoff and resolved with a 39-year old man in custody Wednesday morning.
Maj. Joe Masi, of the Richland County Sheriff’s Department, said a man was arrested at 1933 Satinwood Drive after attacking his mother with a 12-inch knife. Authorities said the suspect held the knife to her throat and threatened to kill her if she did not comply with his demands.
She was able to break free and run out of the house, calling 911. In the process she was assaulted and received a cut on her arm. She did not require medical attention, authorities said.
“He was taken into custody without incident, but he does have a history of mental illness,” Masi said. “He was taken to MedCentral (OhioHealth) for evaluation.”
Masi said law enforcement was called to the scene at around 8:30 a.m. Authorities never had communication with the suspect during the standoff. He was silent while being arrested.
“He just complied with us after giving himself up,” Masi said. “He will likely be charged with a felony based on the information we’ve received.”
Originally, the suspect refused to come out of the residence and ASORT/SWAT was notified to respond. While standing by for ASORT/SWAT, the suspect voluntarily came out of the house and complied with deputy’s demands.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol, Richland County Sheriff’s Department and Mansfield Police blocked off intersections at Satinwood Drive and Laver Road Satinwood Drive and Stone Ridge Avenue. There were also three ambulances on the scene.
The suspect was later transferred to the Richland County Jail.
