MANSFIELD, Ohio — Mansfield City Council will consider legislation that authorizes the safety-service director to advertise for bids and enter into a contracts for resurfacing close to 20 miles of Mansfield roads at its next meeting on Tuesday, March 1.
If approved, City Engineer Bob Bianchi said bids will be opened at the end of March.
In an effort to keep costs down, the project will be bid in two phases, Bianchi said. Phase one pertains to wards one, two and three, while phase two pertains to wards four, five and six.
The project is estimated to cost $4,415,100 and will be paid for mostly by street resurfacing income tax funds, as well as sewer and water funds for related improvements.
Bianchi said the city uses high-end asphalt.
“Right we’re running about 11.5 years, on average, before we resurface a street again,” he said. “And we can maintain that length because of the asphalt that we use.”
Construction is anticipated to begin in late May and wrap up in late September, he said.
However, the timeline could change depending on how the contracts are awarded.
“If one contractor gets both contracts, usually they’ll work from one end of the city and sweep through the way they’d like to go based on their trucking,” Bianchi said. “If two contractors get it, (phase one and two) might very well (occur) at the same time.”
