EDITORIAL — Richland Source welcomed some new team members in recent months and it’s about time we shone a spotlight on them. Our staffing fits our “culture” and is critical to how we cover the communities we serve.

Every story we publish has to be sourced, written, photographed, edited, published, and distributed by a human being. We are very attentive to getting that newsroom culture right and finding the right team for the job.

Larry Phillips and Jarred Bates joined us as new hires, and Dillon Carr is now a full-time reporter.

Larry joined us as associate editor in September.

Larry comes to us with 25 years of journalistic experience in north central Ohio. For the past 15 years he worked as an editor in various capacities at the News Journal, Telegraph-Forum and was in charge of all sports departments at Gannett’s 10 daily newspapers in the Media Network of Central Ohio.

He took Gannett’s buyout option in March, and joined us as soon as he was released from that constraint.

Jarred joined the team as a full time reporter in August.

Jarred first joined us soon after our 2013 launch as a freelancer reporter, and has now come on board full time. Jarred graduated from The Ohio State University. He worked as a videographer and reporter at WMFD and as a freelance reporter at the Mansfield News Journal during college.

After college, he was a copy editor for Gannett, working with 10 newspapers throughout central Ohio, and then as a sports writer. He won an Associated Press award for best sports feature writer.

And congratulations to Dillon Carr, who has been with us as a part-time reporter as he worked his way through The Ohio State University. Dillon recently made the transition to full-time reporter and will concentrate on delivering a wide variety of news for our Galion readers.

Like many companies, culture isn’t just a buzzword for us. We don’t literally do a culture fit interview when we hire like Zappos does, yet actually we do. We ask ourselves, “Does this person fit?”

And in this case, all three of these guys do.
