MANSFIELD, Ohio — UPDATED — A Mansfield man is in Grant Medical Center Tuesday after being transported by LifeFlight from OhioHealth Mansfield MedCentral Hospital on Monday night.

Virgil L. Cates, of 503 Crescent Rd., Mansfield, was driving a Harley-Davidson Motorcycle on Monday afternoon when his vehicle was struck by a Carter Electric truck at the Diamond Street and Second Street intersection, according to Mansfield police.

A Grant Medical Center spokesperson confirmed Cates was admitted to the hospital and was being treated Tuesday afternoon.

Mansfield Police Officer Jodie Williams said the utility truck driver, Jeffery J. McKee, of Galion, ran a red light and was cited.

Williams said the truck driver first struck the motorcyclist, then struck a silver Pontiac. The driver of the Pontiac was not injured. The Pontiac sustained minor cosmetic damage.

“It appeared that the motorcycle driver suffered from head injuries and his right ankle,” Williams said. “It looks like the motorcycle was totaled.”

The motorcycle was pinned under the front of the truck. Harriger Towing and Auto towed the motorcycle and the silver Pontiac.

Removal

Traffic traveling west on East Second Street was redirected through Central Park, said Williams. Traffic traveling north on Diamond Street were directed around the truck, which was situated in the middle of the intersection.

Mansfield police responded to the incident at 1:37 p.m., said Williams. Ladder four of the Mansfield Fire Department also responded to the scene. Firefighters used sand to soak up leaked gasoline.

Normal traffic patterns resumed at approximately 2:15 p.m.
