MANSFIELD, Ohio — Mansfield City Schools board of education approved a three-year “Official Healthcare Sponsor” agreement between OhioHealth MedCentral and the high school’s athletic department Tuesday during their regular meeting.
The $9,500 per year agreement will include a $4,000 sponsorship of one varsity football game, $1,500 sponsorship of the J.C. Gorman wrestling tournament, and $4,000 sponsorship for the Mehock Relays.
Superintendent Brian Garverick said this agreement signifies a partnership for improving the city’s education.
“It really shows that the hospital supports education. They even want to help with promoting and educating STEM programs,” said Garverick.
As part of the agreement, the contract states: “OhioHealth shall work with the school (Mansfield Senior High School) to identify beneficial education opportunities relevant to health care which are available to students and the general public. OhioHealth shall also provide resources for STEM programs. OhioHealth shall also provide information related to healthcare careers.”
OhioHealth MedCentral will set up a tent with representatives from the hospital at the football game, wrestling tournament and the Mehock Relays starting this year, said Garverick.
Search for treasurer
Also during the board’s meeting, Ohio School Board Association member Cheryl Ryan was introduced by board president Renda Cline as the representative assisting with the board’s ongoing search for a district treasurer.
During last month’s meeting, the board of education resolved to enter into contract with the Ohio School Board Association to continue the search for a treasurer, ending their prior agreement with Mid-Ohio Educational Service Center.
The board of education went into executive session at the end of the meeting to discuss OSBA’s search for a treasurer with Ryan. No action was taken directly following the executive session.
Mansfield schools Public Relations Consultant Larry Gibbs explained that Ryan will be reporting to the school board with recommendations on treasurer candidates in the coming months. There are currently no new candidates, according to Gibbs.
Tuesday was interim treasurer Trevor Gummere’s first board of education meeting.
Other approved contracts
The board approved a renewal contract with Ashland University’s Reading Recovery services. The grant-funded program will continue to provide professional development to Reading Recovery teachers.
Also up for renewal was a grant-funded agreement between the Ohio State University at Mansfield and elementary and middle school teachers. OSU-M will provide math literacy professional development throughout the 2015-16 school year.
Enrollment
According to Sept. 2015 figures, enrollment decreased from last year’s report. This year, the total students enrolled with Mansfield City Schools is 3,570. Last year at this time it was 3,752.
Future meetings
The next Financial Planning and Supervision Committee Meeting is Sept. 23, 2015 at 4 p.m. The next regular scheduled board of education meeting is Oct. 20, 2015 at 5 p.m.
Both meetings will be held in Room 1 of the the Raemelton Administration building on 856 West Cook Road.
