MANSFIELD, Ohio — An elderly couple northbound on state Route 603 collided with a commercial semi truck tanker heading west on state Route 30 after failing to yield at the intersection. Mifflin Township Fire department and EMS squads responded Monday at approximately 11 a.m.

Ohio State Highway Patrol Ashland Post Sergeant Jason Bittinger said the pickup truck’s passenger sustained minor injuries and will be seeking her own medical treatment. The drivers of both the semi truck, James Anderson, and the pickup truck, William Ramsey, also sustained minor injuries, according to Sgt. Bittinger.

Ramsey will be cited for failure to yield, said Sgt. Bittinger.

No one involved in the crash were transported to the hospital.

Mifflin Township Fire Chief J.J. Bittinger said the silver pickup truck punctured the semi truck’s saddle tank upon collision, not the trailer’s tank. The puncture resulted in about 50 gallons spilled, said Fire Chief Bittinger.

The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) responded to the scene for cleanup. Bittinger said they plan on soaking up the diesel fuel with sand. Ohio Environment Protection Agency (EPA) will remove the sand, said Sgt. Bittinger.

Traffic headed west on Route 30 was redirected north onto state Route 603. Traffic headed south on 603 was backed up and guided through the intersection at different intervals. Sgt. Bittinger said cleanup should be wrapped up Monday afternoon.
