BUTLER, Ohio–A group of young journalists just put their year-end paper “to bed” and delivered 380 papers to classrooms. They also mailed copies to school board members earlier this week. Many of the student journalists noted that they look forward to continuing as part of next year’s NEWZ team.
The last edition of the Clear Fork KIDZ NEWZ delivered a review of the high school musical “Grease,” a report on summer movies, writing contest winners, plus quizzes, news of the school’s 100 year celebration, and summer crafts and recipes. Students in third –fifth grade help produce the school news.
“I really liked it when we did movie summer releases—the movies that are coming out in the summer. I like that article we did,” Addeline Haring said.
Abbey Fowler said she thought the 100 year celebration was the most important story they wrote. “Our school board wants a lot of people to come to it,” she said. The school is 100 years old and there will be a celebration on May 22 from 5-9 p.m.
“These guys have been through the process of reporting, they type up interview questions, they schedule appointments to make interviews–we’ve had email and phone interviews. They have a little experience, not just in school communication but outside. They’ve got the digital camera down pat, as far as taking pictures with the digital camera,” Cathy Kinney said.
Kinney teaches computer classes for second-fifth grades at Bellville and Butler and leads the news team.
‘[KIDZ NEWZ] will do anything they need to do to get the paper done,” Grant Hayden said of their news team. “It takes teamwork: lots of printing, lots of typing. We have to put the paper in the right order, to make it right so we can deliver it.”
Students in this year’s NEWZ team include Luke Drockton, Corbin Wynkoop, Caitlyn Drackton, Sydney Thorne, Abby Fowler, Grant Hayden, Jaxon Swank, Gwendolyn Police, Madeline Stallard, Ella Wilson, Abby Kern, Alyssa Swank, Addeline Haring, Tony Gadfield, Amanda Lemaster, Morgan Adams, Desarae Salkovick, Arella Hershberger, Ava Springer, and Pacey Chrastina.
