Dr. Gregory Keck

Dr. Gregory C. Keck, age 66, resident of Sagamore Hills, Ohio, died Wednesday, January 21, 2015, at his home.

Born January 13, 1949, in Shelby, he was the son of the late Donald and Jane (Howell) Keck. A 1967 graduate of Shelby High School, he graduated in 1971 from Akron University, received his master’s degree in Social Science Administration from Case Western Reserve in 1973, his PhD in Clinical Psychology from Union Institute in 1978 and received his Social Work License in 1975.

Dr. Keck founded the Attachment and Bonding Center of Ohio, which specializes in the treatment of children and adolescents who have experienced developmental interruptions due to their early traumatic history. He is the co-author of Parenting the Hurt Child and Adopting the Hurt Child. He is the author of Parenting Adopted Adolescents.

His memberships include the Cleveland Psychological Society, the Ohio Psychological Association, the American Psychological Association, and the National Association of Social Workers. From 1991 through 2000, he served on the board of directors of ATTACh, the Association for Treatment and Training in the Attachment of Children. He served as president for two years and was honored by the organization in 2001 with its annual award for outstanding contribution to the field. Dr. Keck was given the Adoption Triad Advocate Award in 1993 by Adoption Network Cleveland. In 2012, Dr. Keck was given the Lifetime Achievement Award by the National Association of Social Workers.

Greg enjoyed his lake house in Huron, jet skiing, taking day trips and socializing with friends. He had a great sense of humor and loved making people laugh. He loved his animals and cherished the time spent with his grandson.

Survivors include two sons, Brian Keck of San Diego, California and James Keck of Sagamore Hills; his grandson, Jackson James Keck; his sister, Sue (Ted) Black of Jacksonville, Florida; niece and nephew, Greg Keck (Melanie) Black and Jennifer Jane Black (Michael Farinella) and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, January 31, 2015 at the Barkdull Funeral Home in Shelby. Reverend Steven Schag will officiate with interment in Oakland Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Dr. Gregory C. Keck Scholarship In Social Work c/o University of Akron, Dept. of Development, Akron, Ohio 44325-2603 and the First United Church of Christ, 23 Church St., Shelby, Ohio 44875.
