Life-long Lucas resident Jamie Langston interviewed for the position of the middle school’s Basketball Cheer Coach when the position was announced in October.

“I interviewed and then spent a few weeks working with the girls,” explained Langston. Involved with the Pee Wee cheer program at the elementary school for the past few years, Langston felt she had the qualifications for the position.

At the October board of education meeting, the board members voted against Langston as the new cheer coach. The position was re-posted but due to what was considered a lack of proper information, the board called a special meeting on Monday night to revisit Langston as an applicant.

Several of the middle school cheer girls and their parents attended the meeting in support of Langston.

Board member Jon Parman was the first to speak at the Monday night’s special meeting regarding the previous month’s decision. “I received numerous phone calls and emails and did some looking into it, talked to parents of the Pee Wee Cheer girls and I myself feel I voted out of ignorance and haste. I make a motion to hire Jamie Langston as the middle school cheer coach.”

Board President Roger Maglott seconded the motion to hire Langston. With one vote against and another abstaining, the rest of the board voted in favor of Langston and she was officially given the position.

The girls and their parents cheered when the announcement was made.

“I’d like to apologize to the girls,” added Parman. “I’m sure last month’s decision had to sting.”

The other item on the special meeting agenda was the announcement that the Elementary School Intervention Specialist Naomi Jackson turned in her resignation. Her resignation was effective on November 7.
