SHELBY — Alexis Jones might not have won a state championship this year, but it’s just a matter of time until the Richland Source Girls Golfer of the Year takes her spot atop the podium.

A sophomore at Shelby, Jones finished second to Leavittsburg LaBrae’s Haylee Harford last month in Columbus. Jones’ two-day total of 142 was one stroke behind Harford, a senior and two-time state medalist.

Jones and Harford were tied after the opening round at Ohio State’s Gray Course after firing matching 2 under 68s.

Jones tied for 14th at the state meet as a freshman.

“That experience helped me,” she said last month. “I wasn’t nervous at all.”

Jones repeated as medalist at the Division II sectional at Valley View. She finished behind 2013 state champ Makayla Dull of Kansas Lakota at the Sycamore Springs district tournament.

Alex Sazdanoff and Abby Conover earned spots on the Richland Source first team after leading Lexington to its first ever state tournament appearance. Lady Lex finished 11th at Ohio State’s Gray Course last month.

A senior, Sazdanoff was selected the Ohio Cardinal Conference Golfer of the Year. She shot an 88 at the Division II Valley View sectional and an 83 at the Sycamore Springs district. Her two-day total of 189 at state was good for a tie for 44th place.

Conover topped Lady Lex in Columbus with a two-day total of 176, good for 32nd place. Conover carded an 89 at sectional and a 90 at district.

Madison sophomore Jenna Messner was an OCC first-team pick after carding a 97 at the conference tournament. She shot a 95 at the North Central Ohio Girls Golf League tournament and a 105 at the Division I sectional at Sycamore Springs.

Mansfield Senior’s Morgan Adkins carded a 100 at Sycamore Springs and was an OCC second team pick after shooting a 101 at the league tournament.
