BELLVILLE — Clear Fork boys soccer coach Brian Kinnard didn’t need to say a word.
The look of relief on his face told sideline observers everything they needed to know after the Colts dodged a bullet in a 3-2 win over Ontario in last week’s Division II sectional opener.
“Survive and advance,” Kinnard said. “That is what it’s all about now.”
The Colts, who knocked off Port Clinton 3-0 in the sectional title game, play Norwalk in the nightcap of today’s district semifinals at Clyde. Lexington, which thundered to a pair of sectional victories by a combined score of 19-0, meets Willard in the opener.
Defending state runner-up Mansfield Christian, which won a sectional title over the weekend with a resounding 16-0 win over Tiffin Calvert, plays Ada in the Division III district semifinals Tuesday at Tiffin Columbian.
In girls soccer action, Clear Fork plays Tiffin Columbian in a Division II district semifinal at 5 p.m. Tuesday in Ashland. Ontario meets Norwalk in the nightcap with the winners playing Saturday for a berth in the regional tournament. The top-seeded Colts and second-seeded Warriors played to a scoreless tie in the season opener.
“We don’t want to overlook anybody,” Clear Fork coach Brittany Bechtel said after last week’s win over Edison. “That (potential rematch) is obviously the looking-ahead part.”
In Division III, Crestview claimed a sectional crown with wins over Upper Sandusky and Mohawk last week. The Cougars will play Liberty-Benton at 7:15 p.m. Wednesday in Findlay.
In volleyball, Madison, Lexington and Galion all won Division II sectional championships. The Rams and Lady Lex will meet for a third time at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Seneca East High School after splitting in the regular season.
“We have high expectations,” Madison senior Ali Brown said after the Rams opened the tournament with a win over Ontario, “but we know it won’t be easy.”
