PLYMOUTH — Owner Bruce Tanner of Levels Gym in Plymouth is hosting workouts at Core Community Church in Shelby on Tuesdays and Thursdays for the rest of the month. The classes are donation only and any money raised goes to the Shelby Helpline.
The way Bruce Tanner sees it, it’s the least he can do.
“There were a ton of people who wanted us to have a class in Shelby, so we decided to do it,” Tanner said. “Shelby Helpline does a lot of good things in the community. They give assistance to people who need it, from helping to pay water bills to counseling services to providing meals for children.
“It’s a great organization and we are glad to help out any way we can.”
Classes are at 4 p.m. and 5:15 p.m. Everyone is welcome.
“There is some running and some lifting. We do body weight exercises,” Tanner said. “It’s a cross-training type of workout.
“So far attendance has been pretty good. We usually have 20 to 30 people in each class.”
Several members of the Plymouth gym drive to Shelby to participate.
“They come over to offer support the new people, which I think is really important. They take the time to encourage them,” Tanner said. “There are a lot of people who are new to working out and one of the things I pride myself in is that we take people who are new to working out and get them started.
“It can be intimidating to walk through the doors for the first time but we try our best to be welcoming.”
Seeing someone achieve his or her goals is what drives the 1996 Plymouth High School graduate.
“I take a lot of pride in starting with someone from scratch and helping them get healthy and lose weight,” Tanner said. “That is more rewarding.”
