Mansfield P.R.E.P. (Positively Restoring and Empowering People) will host their first Mansfield Madness 5K from 5 to 8 p.m. September 13. The walk, run and rally will run through downtown Mansfield.

“It’s going to start at Park Avenue West and Main Street,” said Jessica Luttrell, organizer of the event and founder of Mansfield Positively Restoring and Empowering People (P.R.E.P.). “It will go down Bowman and around Third and back up Main Streets. It will make a full block, several times.”

Participants can walk, run or rally on participants during the 5K, she said. There will be water stations and giveaways.

Luttrell and her husband, DaShawn, host a free fitness class every Monday and Saturday at Ocie Hill Neighborhood Center for community members.

Luttrell said the city, community and local businesses have really been supportive of the downtown evening walk to promote a healthy lifestyle.

“Our mission is to promote health and fitness,” she said. “Just unity amongst the community.”

The cost to participate in the 5K is $15 per person, which includes an event T-shirt. Children ages 6 to 12 are $5 and they will get a T-shirt as well. Luttrell said a portion of the proceeds will be donated to the local homeless and domestic violence shelters.

Registrations will take place the day of the event or participants can register at www.mansfieldmadness3k.weebly.com.

“We wanted to make it different because if it’s in the morning it conflicts with a lot of people’s activities,” she said, “so we thought it would be different to have it in the evening time.”

Luttrell said she hopes to help unite the community through the event.

“We can unite as one community in the evening without any nonsense, crime, violence or chaos,” she said. “It will definitely be an organized activity.”

During the event there will be give-a-ways, music, blood pressure screenings, a breast cancer awareness table and more, said Luttrell.

“We are encouraging everyone to come out to support this event for unity,” Luttrell said. “We also want to support health and being aware of your statuses and things like that which keep us alive.”

Sponsors to date include Smalls Funeral Home, Slater Screen print, Visiting Nurses Association, Signature Health, Kindred Health, Richland Bank, Oasis of Love church, Tha Shoppe, Krogers, Meijers, and Columbia Gas.
