CRESTLINE – Crestline students will have a safer walk to school. A safe crossing grant will be used to create the school crossing and sidewalks for students to use to get to and from school. Safety service director Marc Milliron told the Crestline city council Monday night that the project is funded 100 percent by a $400,000 grant.
Residents near the project will have about three days of inconvenience as construction crews will need to remodel driveway entrances to fit with the new sidewalks. There will be no cost to the residents.
Chris Bruce, Family, Career and Community Leaders of America’s (FCCLA) advisor, and Blake Miller, FCCLA officer, spoke to council members about the FCCLA’s successful year. Members have been active cleaning up and collecting flags in the cemetery and replacing them for Memorial Day. They helped with this year’s annual cemetery walk and the summer backpack program.
The Crestline FCCLA received the 2014 National Leadership Award out of 5,500 clubs nationwide. The group also received the Barack Obama Service Award for performing 1,000 hours of service in the community.
Miller will travel to Arkansas to help facilitate national training for other FCCLA officers. One of the group’s future projects is to challenge the community to eat dinner together. This is a nationwide challenge give out by FCCLA in hopes of touching 70,000 families.
Council held a short public hearing on the rezoning of the old South School property. The buyers of the property would like it rezoned from Residential 1 to Light Industry. There was no discussion. An ordinance to approve the rezoning will be on the council’s next agenda.
