The Bellville Village Council is currently seeking to fill a seat left vacant by the passing of long time council member William “Bill” Sheriff. Sheriff held the position for more than 28 years, many of those as council president.
Sheriff passed away Saturday, August 2, at the age of 70.
Bellville Mayor Darrell Banks, as well as fellow council members, noted that Sheriff is sorely missed. “Bill is responsible for making much of the success Bellville has had over the last two – plus decades possible,” said Banks in a tribute during Sheriff’s funeral. “Many of the projects, policies and legislation were made better because of Bill Sheriff’s input. Thank you, Bill, Bellville is a better place to live because of your years of dedicated service to the Village.”
Sheriff was an active part of the community, serving not only Bellville council but several community organizations, including: Knights of Columbus, the American Legion Irvin Hiskey Post # 535 in Bellville, the Clear Fork Valley Chamber of Commerce, Bellville Lion’s Club, and the Jefferson Grange #251. He was also a part of the Bellville Farmers’ Market for many years, and known for his gourmet popcorn.
During a meeting of the Bellville Village Council held Tuesday, August 19, council member Larry Rose was elected to succeed Sheriff as President pro tempore of Council.
Tuesday’s meeting also saw council hopeful Victor Swisher address the council to introduce himself and explain his interest in the position.
Swisher said that he was born and raised in Bellville. “I’ve always enjoyed Bellville. I’ve felt that this is a community that, when people needed assistance, there were always plenty of people willing to help,” he said.
Swisher said that he hoped to take the opportunity to get involved and help others, and would be interested in being part of council to help make decisions and lead Bellville where everyone would like it to go.
“There really won’t be a replacing of Bill,” he added, noting Sheriff’s extensive community service, as well has his own experience with the Sheriff family at the Bellville pool.
Banks noted that four other local residents had expressed an interest in the seat, as well, though none were present at Tuesday’s meeting.
All parties interested in the council position are encouraged to contact either Banks or any council member including David Griffon, Larry Rose, Joann Palmer, Bruce Snyder, or Steve Beal before Sept. 2. Council member hopefuls must be residents of the village, and may reach Banks at 142 Park Place, Bellville, or by calling 419-886-2245, Extension 5, or by email at mayor@bellvilleohio.net.
During the Sept. 2 regular council meeting, council will enter executive session to discuss the candidates and elect a new member.
Banks added that the village is also seeking volunteers for the Shade Tree Commission and the Flood Plain Commission.
