Richland Bank will hold its annual “Banking on a Cure,” a 5K run/walk on Aug. 23 to benefit the American Cancer Society.

Richland Bank has been involved with the American Cancer Society Relay for Life for over eight years, said co-captain of the Richland Bank Relay for Life team Kristina Dickison. Richland Bank’s relay team sports the same name as this particular race, “Banking on a Cure.”

The team hopes to raise $3,000 with this race to add to the $1240 already raised with Relay this year. Last year, the team raised approximately $3,600.

Dickison said that the American Cancer Society Relay for Life is especially meaningful for her. Dickison’s sister, Rebekah Dickison, was diagnosed with ovarian cancer for the second time last August, and passed away earlier this month.

Kristina Dickison hopes to raise awareness. “They always say you are too young for certain cancers,” she said, noting that ovarian cancer is not tested for at regular checkups. “That particular cancer that she had was something you shouldn’t be diagnosed with until you’re 60. She was originally diagnosed at 30.”

Relay for Life assists cancer patients in many ways, she added. “If you can’t afford a wig, Relay for Life will buy one for you. They provide skin products, makeup, counseling, and if you can’t get to your chemo, they will bring someone to come get you.”

The “Banking on a Cure” 5K will begin at Malabar Middle School, located at 205 West Cook Road in Mansfield on Aug. 23 at 9 a.m. There is no deadline for registration, though the first 150 participants will receive T-shirts. The registration fee is $20.

Awards will be presented to the fastest male, female, and child under 14 years old.

Corporate teams and individuals of all ages are welcome to participate.

Kristina Dickison added that cancer is something that affects every single person. “I don’t know one person who doesn’t know someone who has had cancer. The disease is huge, it’s everywhere.”
