Recently our family had a week vacation in Hilton Head. We had a great house located in the Shipyard Plantation. We had our middle school boys and our recently graduated high school boys. All of them brought a friend and we had a great time.

I would like to encourage you to visit this island, if you have not in your travels. This is a great family destination. We have been a few times to Hilton Head and we really like this area of the island.

Shipyard, like other areas on the island, is gated. This security added to a safe feeling to allow our 18 and 19 year olds to pretty much take off and enjoy the area.

The house we stayed in had bikes for us to use and the boys rode them everywhere. They could ride to the private beach access and also to Coligny Plaza for shopping and restaurants. It gave us a break, and them freedom.

Here are some great food highlights we found on this trip that I highly recommend, with $ to indicate comparative pricing:

Coligny Plaza, Earle of Sandwich Pub: Fantastic sandwiches, under $30 for 2, with fantastic deli meat sandwiches and homemade chips.

Charlie’s L’ etoile Verte, Inc:  Fabulous fine dining in a resort casual atmosphere. Outstanding service and a chef’s daily changing menu based on locally caught seafood make this a must for all foodies out there.

Jim and Nick’s BBQ is off island in Bluffton, but is great for a local southern barbecue with a kick.

The Skull Creek Boathouse: Great location on Skull Creek and views from this restaurant. Popular with the locals, great casual atmosphere and great fresh seafood.

Hudson’s is just around the bend from the Boathouse, but the reviews are not as good.

Old Oyster Factory: Resort casual, great food.  Good location on Broad Creek surrounded by the oyster beds and the occasional dolphin or two.

When you venture to Savannah, I highly recommend Vic’s on River Street.  Fabulous food, great location, and you can enjoy a great lunch with the family with casual dress. Evening dinner dress is more business casual.

If you want to get your own fresh catch and cook it yourself, locals recommend Barnacle Bills off William Hilton Parkway on Hilton Head Island. He has his own captains that he works with and has some of the best catches each day.
