Graduation is an exciting time for students all across Richland County. It’s a time of pride and accomplishment, and of moving on to bigger and better things. For Sherman Elementary’s preschool students, this means making the big move from preschool to kindergarten.

On Thursday, 21 preschoolers turned their tassels and graduated on to kindergarten in a musical ceremony at Sherman Elementary School. A total of 37 preschoolers graduated, with 16 students preparing for a second year of preschool.

Preschool teacher Brittany Lieb said the students have been busy all year experiencing a hands-on learning style.

“They get to really explore the classroom, participate in art and music and use their hands and their fine motor skills,” she said.

The students showed off their singing voices as well as what they’ve learned over the year through a number of songs. Rhyming to the beat was the theme of “Make A Rhyme, Make A Move,” colors were reviewed in “Crazy Color Creatures,” and body parts were presented in “Take That Beanbag,” to name a few.

Amidst a sea of fidgeting and giggling, each preschooler received a diploma or certificate at the end of the ceremony as well as a few hugs from their teachers. After a few photo opportunities, it was time for cookies and punch served in the cafeteria.

Three-year-old Kayleen Blackwell said her favorite part of the ceremony was singing, and her mother Jamie agreed. Preschooler Mason Baxter said his favorite part of preschool this year was playing with toys.

“I’m so proud of him, he’s awesome,” said his mother Brittany.

“He really enjoyed school this year,” added his grandmother Pam Bond.

Lieb said her favorite part of preschool graduation is watching the parents take in all the students have learned throughout the year.

“Having all these people here to see them, the kids feel very loved,” she said.
