Memorial Day 2014 in Richland County offers a few opportunities for residents to pay their respects to those who lost their lives in military service to our country. It is traditional to fly the flag of the United States at half-mast from dawn until noon; and remember, when a flag passes, spectators should place their right hand over their heart.

Prior to Monday, a Memorial Day program will be held in Shelby on Sunday, May 25, at 10 a.m. at the Nazarene Church, 169 Mansfield Ave, Shelby. The service will honor veterans who passed away since Memorial Day 2013.

On Monday, May 26, area communities will hold Memorial Day parades and ceremonies.

Butler and Galion will hold among the earliest parades. The parade begins in Butler at 9 a.m., with line-up at 8:30 a.m. The parade will proceed down Main Street to a service held at the park. The Galion Memorial Day Parade meets on S. Market St. at 9 a.m. and continues to the cemetery.

In Bellville, the parade begins at 11 a.m. at Ogle and Main streets and proceeds to Church St. and then on to the Bellville Cemetery. Mayor Darrell Banks will be the speaker for the ceremony and Ms. Poppy, Tori Skoog, will lay a wreath of poppies for fallen soldiers.

The Lexington Kiwanis will host the community’s Memorial Day Parade on Monday, as well. The parade starts at 10 a.m. at the high school on Clever Lane. Those who would like to participate in the parade are asked to be at the high school no later than 9:30 a.m.

The parade will leave the high school, turning onto Clever Lane to Delaware Street (Route 42) and proceed down to Main Street to the cemetery. For questions or concerns, please call or 419-884-0765 ext. #8.

In Mansfield, the parade will be held at 10:30 a.m. with a ceremony at 11 a.m. at the gazebo in downtown.

The city of Shelby will also hold a Memorial Day parade. The parade begins at 10 a.m. at Main St. and Wentz Ave. and proceeds to the ceremony held at Oakland Cemetery. The parade marshall will be David Rousch and veterans leading the parade are Mic Hubbard of American Legion Post #326 and Dusty Hall of VFW Post #291.
