On Tuesday, Plymouth girls softball battled Wynford in Plymouth. The young Plymouth squad launched their 2014 campaign with a win.
Wynford leaped out to and early lead with 2 run first inning, The first two batters to the plate reached on a in on a walk and error, then the visiting team cashed in with a 2 out, 2 run single in the bottom of the first.
In the second, Plymouth’s all-conference ace Addyson Horne struck out the side and remained in control for the night, fanning 9 Wynford batters. Wynford would score only once more in the top of the sixth for 3 runs on the night.
A big fourth made all the difference for Plymouth. Thirteen trips to the plate yielded 6 of 13 total hits and 5 of 8 total runs. The big blow came from a Haven Keene double that scored Morgan Fletcher, Janet Arnold and Taylor Patton.
Plymouth’s offense also remained silent until the fifth, when Lexi Washburn scored on a Romy Thornsberry single.
Plymouth tallied two more in the sixth. Leadoff hitter Fletcher, a 1st team all-conference shortstop, launched game’s single home run over the left field wall. Two at bats later, Keene reached single and was ultimately sent around the bases on a Brooke Thornsberry single to right field.
The Plymouth offense produced 8 runs, 13 hits. Freshman Romy Thornsberry went 3 for 3 with a pair of steals and an RBI in her varsity debut. Keene followed with two hits and 3 RBIs. In four trips to the plate, Lexi Washburn turned in two walks and a double complemented by two runs scored and a stolen base.
