In 1943 President Franklin D. Roosevelt designated March as “Red Cross Month.” Seventy-one years later, Richland County celebrates the month of March as they recognize nominated heroes around the area, and thank public service workers for their partnership in disaster relief.

In an effort to recognize the volunteers and to corral new ones, Disaster Specialist Julie Frim trekked across Richland County Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons to the different fire stations. She suggested they fly the Red Cross flag, one that resembles the Swiss flag.

The Red Cross chapter in Richland County also currently has three interns working to inspire new volunteers to work to achieve their mission: to prevent and alleviate human suffering in the face of emergencies by mobilizing the power of volunteers and the generosity of donors.

The Red Cross’ work has recently undergone amendments to the Congressional Charter and signed by the President of the United States. This was done to ensure the work of The American Red Cross continues.

A Presidential proclamation states, “During American Red Cross Month, we honor those who devote themselves to bringing relief where there is suffering, inspiring hope where there is despair, and healing the wounds of disaster and war.”

During the month of March, residents will notice the Red Cross flag flying at fire stations.“We want to thank the fire departments for their support during this month,” said Frim.

Mansfield Fire Department Chief Steve Strickling commented on the Red Cross’ involvement in the community: “The Red Cross provides vital assistance to the citizens of Mansfield through both disaster relief efforts and assistance to families that have property loss or need shelter immediately following a fire in their residence and we thank them very much for that service.”

On May 1, 2014, an event will be held for the volunteers in Richland County who have served. The American Red Cross chapter in Mansfield will choose specific “heroes” to recognize. See the Red Cross website for more details on the event and to learn how to nominate a hero. Their office phone number is 419-524-0311. They also have a Facebook page.
