The Shelby City Health Department sponsors a walking program even when the weather is a bit “frightful.” Look Who’s Walking takes place indoors during the colder months of the year on Tuesdays. From April-Oct., the program moves outdoors on Monday evenings.
On March 4, “Look Who’s Walking will begin at the Shelby Y 111 W. Smiley Avenue and will continue March 11, 18 and 25 at 11 a.m.
Director of Nursing of the Shelby City Health Department Jennifer Perkins stated, “The leaders are community members that will speak briefly about health, wellness, and/or safety. Last year we had police officers, firefighters, dentists, physicians, surgeons, podiatrists, etc. It was a lot of fun with plenty of great tips.”
Last year, Perkins explained that there were a total of 74 participants registered for” Look Who’s Walking”. This year, Perkins would like to see that number continue to rise. “This year I am hoping to reach 100 participants. The bonus of this is that it is free of charge and there are incentives offered,” said Perkins.
The Shelby City Health Department has an Environmental Health division that focuses on protecting the community through a variety of ways. Registered Sanitarian Andrea Barnes shared how the Shelby City Health Department protects the community. “The Environmental Health division of Shelby City Health Department employs two sanitarians who work on protecting the public through inspections, investigations, education, and enforcement (when necessary),” said Barnes.
The Environmental Health division license and inspect food service operations and establishments, swimming pools, and tattoo/piercing businesses. Complaints that are reported are investigated.
“We investigate animal bites for rabies prevention and whenever possible we inform, educate, and empower people about environmental health/disease prevention,” added Barnes.
