Audrey DeVault was named this year’s Ski Queen during Snow Trails’ 53rd Annual Ski Carnival on Saturday.
Decked out in pink sunglasses and a purple sash, DeVault, 21, smiled brightly when previous reigning Ski Queen Leslie Whaley passed over the crown.
A native of Fredericktown, DeVault has snowboarded for the past five years and picked up skiing two years ago. “I’ve always been active and I would get bored in the winter so one of my friends gave me lessons one day,” she said.
She has also received a few tips from fellow co-workers at Snow Trails. DeVault works in the Child Learning Center at Snow Trails, where she instructs three to nine-year-olds how to ski and snowboard.
“It’s fun and challenging. I like watching when someone falls in love with the sport that I fell in love with,” she said.
Snow Trails is the only place she’s skied, she said, “It’s kind of like home here; we’re all family and it’s fun teaching people.”
When she’s not out on the slopes, she’s inside the classroom at The Ohio State University at Mansfield, where she is currently studying to earn a degree in biology. She said she eventually wants to pursue veterinarian school.
As part of the celebration for being crowned ski queen, “The Champ,” as her friends called her, said, “I’ll probably just go out and ski some more. We usually go out in big groups and ride and it’s really fun.”
