Mohican School in the Out-of-Doors, Inc. will be hosting a “Sweetheart Hike” for couples and the family on February 9, 2014 in spirit of the inevitable romantic air on Valentine’s Day, which will fall on the Friday of that week.

The hike for the adults will start at 3 p.m. at Mohican School in the Out-of-Doors on 5391 Bunker Hill North Road in Butler. A puppet show will held at the same time to entertain children. A special hike through the woods that takes approximately 20 minutes is planned for the children after the puppet show. The event will end at 5 p.m.

The main attraction of this hike is Hemlock Falls. The waterfall that cascades 80 feet and provides a setting that some describe as “very romantic.” In fact, Don and Diana Plant have been to each of the four annual hikes were engaged at the site in 1963. Their story can be found here.

The hike also includes a local legend that aims to explain the multiple trees that have grown together, symbolizing indivisible love.

“This is one of easiest things we do because people like to hike,” said program coordinator Steve James. He said the event as a fundraiser for the school. Mohican School in the Out-of-Doors Inc. is a nonprofit organization and holds similar events throughout the year.

The school is in session from September until May and is primarily a hands-on education. The school opens in the summer as a day camp.

The event costs $10 for a single admission, $15 for a couple admission and $20 for a family admission. Proceeds will go toward supporting the costs of running a nonprofit school. James estimated over 50 people will be in attendance this year.

Be advised that some areas of the trails on this hike may cause strain to hips, knees, and ankles. The trails are not wheelchair accessible, but a campfire will be available to those not able to make the hike.
