The Shelby Lady Whippets travelled to Lexington for a Tuesday night non-conference girls varsity basketball battle with Lady Lex. The Lady Whippets scored the first two points and fended off Lexington for the rest of the game to win, 40-38.
The game score sheet recorded just 2 ties and zero lead changes. The Lady Whippets extended their lead as far as 27-17 in the third and ended the quarter up 29-25. Lady Lex stormed back with 13 in the fourth, but Shelby held them off with to finish with 40-38.
Shelby gave up 16 turnovers and Lady Lex lost 18. Shelby converted Lex’s 18 turnovers into 15 points while Lexington only recovered 7 points from their opponents 16 turnovers.
Kelly Rhodes led Lexington with 15 points, 14 rebounds and 3 blocked shots. Alex Fitzpatrick chipped in 6 points and pulled down 10 rebounds. Emily Stevens scored 7 points with 5 rebounds. Their efforts helped Lexington win the rebound battle, 42-37.
For the Lady Whippets, Kenna Goth led with 12 points. Taylor Fulton added a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Gabby Stephens tallied 7 points, 4 rebounds and 3 steals.
Up next, both teams return to league play. Lexington will travel to Clear Fork on Jan. 30. Shelby will travel to Ontario on Feb. 1.
