Mayor Marilyn John of Shelby was awarded “Elected Official of the Year” by the Area Agency on Aging, Ohio District 5 at Tuesday evening’s council meeting.
Diane Ramey with the Area Agency on Aging, Ohio District 5 presented Mayor John with the award. Ramey explained how important community involvement is to the agency. “We realize how valuable it is to the agency to have caregivers, clients, community members, and leaders in the community to be a part of what is done at the agency. We cannot do this alone and we need many people within the community to help us do that,” said Ramey.
Ramey revealed that at the agency’s annual meeting in December, Mayor John was awarded the “Elected Official of the Year.”
“This is an award that we take very seriously. She was a very critical person in helping get senior levy services or transportation dollars to come to Shelby. She was a very important player in getting the levy passed again and it was a huge benefit to have her on our team. We really just want to thank her for all of her efforts,” said Ramey.
Area Agency on Aging, Ohio District 5 is one of 12 aging agencies in the state of Ohio and covers nine counties which include Ashland, Crawford, Huron, Knox, Marion, Morrow, Richland, Seneca, and Wyandot. “Our goal and focus is to be a leader and to be a resource for older adults, caregivers, and those that are disabled. We want to connect with our clients on a personal level,” said Ramey.
Programs that are offered through the agency are designed to assist older individuals with remaining healthy in a way to continue participating in society. Older individuals, caregivers, and their families can access assistance, consultation, and extended care services through the agency.
Mayor John graciously thanked the Area Agency on Aging for presenting her with the award.
“The agency has been incredibly helpful to me. They are a real asset to this community and they represent nine counties, but we get to have them actually be located in Richland County,” said John.
“All of you at the agency make it very easy to work with and I thank you for everything,” said John.
