In a brief press release issued Wednesday, Nov. 20, the Richland County Sheriff’s Office (RCSO) announced that Maj. Dale Fortney was no longer employed by the department.
The release stated, “The Richland County Sheriff’s Office ended the employment relationship with Major Dale Fortney earlier this week Major Fortney is a fine law enforcement officer and the RCSCO is thankful for his contributions to the office and the community. No decision has been made about when or if his position will be assumed by anyone else.”
Fortney, 61, retired from the city police department and subsequently joined the sheriff’s department.
Sheriff Steve Sheldon chose not to comment and Fortney could not be reached.
